THC & CBD

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) may be controversial to some in the sports medicine world — but their applications in injury rehabilitation and prevention are endless.

Dr. Benjamin Cowin (DC, MS, ATC, ICSC, CAFS) is a worldwide leader in the use of THC and CBD in the practice of sports medicine. Dr. Cowin has served the Mile High City for nearly a decade, though he has been practicing for more than 20 years.

Dr. Cowin proudly practices at Action Spine & Sports Medicine in the heart of Denver, Colorado, on the edge of the River North Art District (RiNo).

What is THC?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (abbreviated THC) in the psychoactive compound found in the Cannabis plant. THC is helpful with certain sports-related injuries for a multitude of reasons, not just because of its psychological calming effects.

  2. Quality sleep
  3. Anti-anxiety
  4. Anti-nausea
  5. Neuroprotection (brain health & protection)
  6. Antispasmodic – decreases muscle spasms

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (abbreviated CBD) is the non-psychoactive compound found in the Cannabis plant. While CBD is not a miracle drug, it’s ability to truly impact the body without significant side effects does make it seem like it! Only with the science to support it.

THC & CBD FAQ

CBD, or cannabidiol, as it’s otherwise known, is a naturally occurring compound extracted from the cannabis plant. There are many chemicals within the cannabis sativa plant and these are called cannabinoids. Two of the most well-known are THC and CBD.

THC is the psychoactive chemical that produces a ‘high’. CBD however, is not known to cause any psychoactive effects. To be legal in the UK, CBD products must contain less than 0.2% THC and therefore CBD products allow you to experience the benefits of the other cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant without experiencing any psychoactive effects.

When comparing hemp oil vs. CBD oil, the key difference is that the two products come from different parts of the hemp plant. Hemp oil comes from the seeds, and CBD oil can be extracted from the stems and leaves. Hemp oil is unrefined whereas cannabidiol oil is usually highly refined in order to isolate the most beneficial compounds of the plant.

Yes, cannabidiol (CBD) oil is currently legal in the state of Colorado — and, unlike many other states, Colorado allows for hemp to be used as a food additive. Colorado is one of the country’s most progressive states on legalizing cannabis.
